We all have that special piece or two in our closet that becomes our go-to for almost everything. It can be dressed up or dressed down, it’s stylish but not too trendy… but most importantly: it just FITS.
This is all well and good to a certain extent, but - in the age of social media - we can only get away with repeat outfits so many times before people start to wonder “does she even own anything else?” And that’s all-the-while assuming we somehow manage to live in this piece day-in and day-out without any ill-fated spills of red wine or marinara sauce.
This leads me to an important (and often overlooked) way you can recreate that same, warm feeling you get when you see your favorite sweater or LBD hanging in your closet with more of the clothes hanging right next to it: tailoring! Many people automatically associate tailoring with pant suits or wedding dresses, but that’s not the kind of tailoring I’m talking about today. There are countless, simple ways that you can leverage a great tailoring service to take even your casual wardrobe from “everyday” to #OOTD!
To start, here are four things all women wear in some combination almost every day - all of which can (and should) be tailored...
T-shirts are generally not overly exciting, not overtly flattering, not really special in any way… you get the picture. We wear our tees because they’re comfy, but so often we forfeit our own style for this comfort - and unnecessarily so! Your basic, shapeless t-shirt can be totally transformed by any number of simple edits; tees can be shortened or slimmed and the sleeves shortened, tapered or even tacked up! These small changes can make a big difference and instantly elevate your look without making it any less cozy.
Let’s be honest, here: there is nothing more uncomfortable than ill-fitting spaghetti straps. Okay, there probably is something less comfortable, but straps that are too long, constantly sliding down and awkwardly drooping off your shoulders are SO annoying. No one wants to be walking down the street and constantly having to adjust their clothes! Shortening the straps on tank tops is a super simple and inexpensive alteration that can make that great silk cami or comfortable cotton tank ten times better!
I don’t care who you are: if you say you don’t love jeans, you’re lying! Denim is God’s universal gift to our wardrobes and can be incorporated into a billion different outfits in a million different scenarios. That said: you’re living in your denim, so anything less than an absolutely perfect fit is unacceptable.
A good tailor can take your distressed jeans that all your older family members like to poke fun at (we’ve all heard the classic “if you wanted holes in your jeans, I could’ve ripped them for you” dad joke that just never seems to die) and shorten them… without losing that original, raw hem which is why you bought them in the first place! If you have a pair that’s the perfect length, but find that you’re having to pull them up every five minutes: it may be time to take in that waist! Okay jeans are literally everywhere, but truly great jeans are hard to come by (and can be quite expensive!) Spare yourself the headache of digging through mountains of denim for a perfect new pair by sprucing up the pair you gave up on in the bottom of your drawer… all it takes is a quick and easy alteration or two.
Whether you’re working out or just running errands, sometimes you just don’t have the time to assemble anything more involved than a boyfriend tee and leggings… and that’s okay! As much as we all act like we hate them, deep down we all known that leggings will probably be around after the nuclear apocalypse with only cockroaches and Cher to keep them company. We’re gonna keep wearing them, so why not make them work for us?
Are your leggings slouching around your ankles and creeping over your heels? Or - even worse - are they all bunched up on your calves? If you answered yes to any of these: it’s okay… you didn’t know any better. But now you do. Getting your leggings hemmed is a quick way to ensure that - even on your “no pants” days - you still look polished and no one can really figure out how. Now you can unashamedly proceed to wear your leggings with your sneakers, sandals, stilettos… whatever feels right!
